Sarah Jessica Parker speaks out against unfair criticism of female characters

Sarah Jessica Parker recently spoke out against the double standards fans hold in their biased views of women.

In an interview about her role on HBO’s Sex and the City, Sarah defended her character Carrie Bradshaw — the sex columnist in And Just Like That… — arguing that flawed female characters often face harsher criticism than even the worst male characters.

The Golden Globe winner explained, “It fascinates me how heavily women are condemned for certain behaviors, while a male lead on a show can be a murderer and still adored by audiences.”

She added, “When a woman has an affair, acts badly, or spends money unwisely, there’s this punitive reaction.”

Reflecting on Carrie, Sarah Jessica Parker told the outlet, “At her core, Carrie is a fundamentally decent and kind person — a loyal friend who is generous with her time and spirit in everything she offers.”

The actress, known for her role in Hocus Pocus, noted that such complex emotional responses — both positive and negative — are actually quite remarkable.

“That kind of strong connection and the range of feelings it stirs up are wonderful,” said the 60-year-old actress.

Sarah went on to say, “People become captivated by these moments, and I think that’s completely natural.”

She concluded, “It’s interesting to observe how differently women are judged compared to men.”
